History

Kong's (Aust.) Pty Limited began in early 1980 in Hong Kong, since then it has grown considerably expanding first to Australia in 1991 then to New Zealand in 1996 and most recently China.
Set up by two brothers Davy and Raingo Kong the company has gone from strength to strength. This is regardless of the fact that they started from humble beginnings selling live fish in the Hong Kong market. Kong's now distribute about 4000 different products to retailers around the globe.

Today Kong's source products from more than 20 countries and have attracted major pet suppliers such as the likes of Tetra, Rio, Vitakraft, Hydor, Rena and Arcadia to compliment their own range.

Development of their own range of products has been pivotal to their success offering customers a low cost quality alternative for the marketplace in pets, aquaria, birds and reptiles. Currently the new brand names are Pet One, Aqua One, Avi One and Reptile One.

With the opening of the China arm of Kong's they have been able to develop new products and vastly improve packaging.

Kong's company philosophy is to grow the market and involve more people in aquarium and animal keeping to ensure the longevity of their own growth.

KONG'S AUST PTY. LIMITED

Davy Kong came to Australia in 1990 with a container of products and a vision. He began by selling out of the back of his car to aquarium retailers around Sydney.

Davy wasted no time finding trade shows and setting up exhibits from as early as 1992. He wanted to let retailers know he was here and serious about selling to them. Not just in one place either, he went to both Melbourne & Brisbane to do trade shows.

His garage became his first warehouse and his house an office from 1993-1995. Business grew quickly as Davy honed his successful formula and soon out-grew the house and garage set-up.

In 1995 Kong's Australia Pty Ltd located their new warehouse at 65 Fairford road Padstow. It was a totally bare structure and in October that year construction began on an office & upper level for the warehouse.

The racking was built and the containers began to roll in. By November 20 that year all was set up and Kong's Australia held their first open warehouse night.

By this stage Kong's Australia already had a number of suppliers and growth continued until it was evident it was necessary to open a warehouse in Melbourne.

Continued market growth in Melbourne soon warranted it's own warehouse and a long-time employee was soon on a plane to Melbourne to find a warehouse, set it up and begin to look for some local sales representatives.
Wasting no time a regular client base was soon established servicing Melbourne locally as well as expanding into Tasmania.
In the meantime the Sydney business was booming and country customers also came on board. Sydney is now looking to move to a warehouse in Ingleburn four times the current size.
Davy negotiated early in the piece to find distributors for each of the states working with Complete Pet & Vet Supplies Queensland, AusPet & Vet in South Australia and Symonds in Western Australia

KONG'S NEW ZEALAND LTD

Davy Kong soon realised the potential in Australia and decided to expand to a nearby country New Zealand where the market was ripe for another competitor.
Paula Clarke who had been in the pet industry for a number of years already was selected to start Kong's NZ Ltd in 1996. With a lot of hard work Kong's NZ was soon selling to retailers and finding their own market niches.
It wasn't long until the Kong's formula was at work and yet another warehouse was outgrown. The Kong's New Zealand family now boasts a group of 13 staff and a growing product range including Nature's Recipe dog food.

KONG'S HONG KONG

Upon entering Kong's Hong Kong Office there are many differences evident to the other offices, one of those being the most obvious - the lack of space. To get to the warehouse in Hong Kong you need to take the lift to the third floor for starters. It's hot and humid and at the doorway there's a Buddhist shrine, the culture is definitely different.

It's Saturday and the office is a flurry of activity at the edge of the small warehouse, which is in full motion. Pallets are being moved about and there is an obvious lack of space. There's the same familiar structure of shelving in the warehouse and many of the familiar products that Kong's carry in Australia and New Zealand.

Noticeably there are a few more types of air pumps to cater for the highly competitive Hong Kong marketplace but basically the range has the same basic elements as Kong's Australia & New Zealand.
Stock is taken downstairs via the goods lift and in a building like this with so many others time is limited in the lifts. The warehouse itself is conveniently located near the loading docks of the harbour for shipping internationally.
Upstairs there is what seems like a loft room is found for a showroom and boardroom table where customers can be surrounded by Kong's products.
Kong's Hong Kong is a hub for the international sales of products selling to places such as the USA, Singapore, and China.

Kong's China distributes quality locally made products to the marketplace in China, opening up windows of activity in the Southern & Eastern regions.
Based in Guangzhou Kong's China has its own warehouse and office allowing them to be able to import high quality products for their customers from around the world making them market leaders in their chosen product fields.
